New Research Supports Talc Ovarian Cancer Claims

For decades, victims have been filing lawsuits alleging that the talc in Johnson & Johnson baby powder caused their ovarian cancer. Even as accusations against the company have poured in, J&J has insisted that their product is safe, and that there is not sufficient research to demonstrate a link to cancer. New research shows otherwise. I’ll detail the findings below and brief you on when a baby powder cancer attorney in New York may be able to help. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer after using baby powder, call 1-800-NOW-HURT ASAP!

Powerful Evidence Links Baby Powder to Ovarian Cancer

Recently published research in the Journal of Clinical Oncology shows that what ovarian cancer sufferers have been claiming for decades may in fact be true. National Institutes of Health researchers reviewed 50,000 cases of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer from 2003 through 2009. The study found that 56% of women had used talcum powder in their genital area, and found an association between this use of the product and ovarian cancer. If the product was used more frequently or for longer periods of time, the association was even greater.

This new research will provide fuel for prosecutors in ongoing legal battles with J&J, which has long insisted that their products do not contain asbestos and denied that their products are unsafe. While it is likely that the company will try to refute the evidence, it continues to mount against them, with over 50,000 lawsuits currently on file.

If you have used baby powder and are facing ovarian cancer, a baby powder cancer lawyer at Buttafuoco & Associates may be able to help. There are multidistrict litigation and individual lawsuits underway, and our attorneys can tell you whether or not you have a case and how best to recover the compensation you need to recover.

A History of Negligence

The first lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson alleging that its baby powder caused cancer was filed in 1999, when a woman claimed it had caused her mesothelioma–a rare form of lung cancer typically caused by asbestos exposure. Ten years later, another woman came forward claiming that J&J’s baby powder caused her ovarian cancer.

Since then, Johnson & Johnson has been taken to court by thousands of victims and suffered billions of dollars in losses. In May 2024, they agreed to pay $6.5 billion to resolve remaining cases, but the process would be complicated: involving moving cases to bankruptcy court for their subsidiary LTL Management, and requiring three-quarters of claimants to agree to the settlement.

What may be the worst part of these cases is the fact that a Reuters investigation in 2018 uncovered evidence that Johnson & Johnson knew its products were contaminated with asbestos as far back as the 1970s. The company continues to deny that this is true. However, because talc is often found near asbestos deposits in nature, it is not unlikely that talcum powder products would be contaminated with the carcinogen. Another theory is that some chemicals in talcum powder can disrupt hormones or cause inflammation, both of which have been associated with cancer.

Although many lawsuits have been filed to date, there is still time to file yours. Read more about the process here.
